Rust beats Cyberpunk 2077 to become the best-selling game on Steam
Seven years after its initial release in December 2013, Rust has now become the top-selling game on Steam. Rust beat CDPR's Cyberpunk 2077 which sat at the apex of the top-sellers list for 7 weeks on Steam and now the game has slid down to the third position.
Rust came under the spotlight after several streamers like Jacksepticeye, Myth, and Shroud showed a renewed interest in the game. As these streamers have a large influence over the community, tons of players also joined the servers to rediscover their love for this survival game by Facepunch Studios.
Rust registers its highest ever player count
Last week Rust registered over 629,400 players and to accommodate them all, developer Facepunch Studios is adding more servers to the game. Rust's recent rise to popularity can be compared to that of Among Us which witnessed a similar kind of growth during the global lockdown last year.
According to a tweet by Gary Newman, Founder of Facepunch Studios, Rust helped the studio earn $1 million twice in one week. So far, Rust has sold more than 9 million copies since release and generated gross revenue of over $142 million.
Rust is an exclusively multiplayer open-world survival game developed and published by Facepunch Studios for macOS and Microsoft Windows. The game is scheduled to release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2021.
The game calls for your fighting spirit as you hustle to survive in the wilderness while other players will try to steal your resources and leave you to die. Apart from that, wild animals like bears and wolves are also a threat.
