Sony announces State of Play event for this week; don't expect any major PS5 news just yet
Yesterday, Sony announced a new State of Play event scheduled for this week. Many people got their hopes up and were expecting major news regarding the PS5, but, Sony clarified and stated that the event will in no way be focused on the PS5.
However, PlayStation has tempered expectations for the event, promising “no big PS5 announcements” with a focus instead on PS4 and PSVR titles. At this stage in the console life cycle, we don't know what Sony has planned for the PS4.
Sony State of Play will be held this Thursday
In a PlayStation blog post, Sid Shudman confirmed that “there will be no PlayStation Studios updates in Thursday’s episode. There won’t be any updates around hardware, business, preorders, or dates either.”
The 40-minute long event will instead focus “squarely on showcasing some cool upcoming games coming to the broader PlayStation ecosystem.”
After Sony announced it’s ‘Listen with Sony’ event for August 6, the alleged State of Play rumoured for the same day seemed unlikely to happen, but this seems not to have put PlayStation off their event.
The description states that there will be “A few quick check-ins on third-party and indie games from June’s PS5 showcase.”
We expect these to include Hitman, NBA 2K21 and everyone’s favourite food-related game, Bugsnax.
The Japanese blog post for the State of Play also confirmed we would receive new information for the upcoming Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time.
Hopefully, this event will be followed up by a PS5 State of Play pretty soon after which will reveal all these details.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is one of the titles expected to come to the PlayStation 5 at launch, and so it may be one of the games that gets a deeper look into the gameplay at the next PS5 State of Play.
For fans disappointed that there was no God of War 2 announcements, it’s unlikely these games will be revealed in any events before the PlayStation 5 releases.
