Nintendo beats PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to ship 1 million units of the Switch in China
It's been one year since the Nintendo Switch was launched in China and now the company has registered a sale of 1 million units in the country, according to a report from Reuters. Nintendo Co. Ltd. partnered with Tencent to launch the Nintendo Switch in China in December 2019.
From the official figures, Nintendo has become the biggest console seller in the country beating Sony and Microsoft. Research firm Niko Partners says that neither the PlayStation 4, nor the Xbox One managed to get such a significant response or put up similar figures after one year of launch in the country.
Console gaming in China
Nintendo partnered with Tencent to make their portable console available to a larger audience. Tencent has a large influence over the gaming market in China as it is one of the biggest video games distributor in the country, especially of mobile games. China was a perfect choice as the gaming market is dynamic and full of opportunities even though consoles are not the primary platforms for gaming in the country.
“China is important to Nintendo because the country does not yet have a console culture in the same way that the U.S. or Japan does, which represents a growth opportunity for the company," says Daniel Ahmad, Analyst, Niko Partners.
Niko Partners forecasts China’s console market revenue will reach $2.15 billion in 2024.
As of September 2020, Nintendo has sold over 68 million Switch units worldwide generating a massive profit for the company. In terms of popularity, Nintendo Switch was on par with Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One.
Some of the most popular games on Nintendo Switch include Hollow Knight, Hades, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and more.
