Gearbox says new Borderlands 3 Arms Race Mode Is Like "A Totally New Game"

Borderlands 3 is an action, role-playing looter-shooter epic by Gearbox Software. The game is a sequel to Borderlands 2 and is the most popular among the rest of the Borderland series with a sale of more than 5 million copies within 5 days of it's release.

Gearbox has since released a lot of paid downloadable content for Borderlands 3. Their latest DLC which will be released later this month features a brand new Arms Race Mode.

A Battle Royale... but not really

Gearbox says that Arms Race will be a standalone mode where players will be brought on an isolated map and every gun the players pick up will matter throughout the game mode. Executive Producer and Founder of Gearbox Software Randy Pitchford said in a report by GameSpot that the new mode feels like "a totally new game" and it has elements that players who love Battle Royale games might find interesting, but it is "not a battle royale game."

"So I think some of the folks that maybe are only interested in narrative experiences, we might lose them," Pitchford said. "But the folks that love the RPG loot and love that gear fighting experience, and also maybe folks who play completely different games... I have a feeling some Call of Duty folks are going to turn their head and go, 'Wait a minute. What's this?' Even some battle royale people are going to go, 'That sounds interesting. I want to check that out.' It's not a battle royale game, though. So we're not doing that."

Gearbox Software Creative Director, Graeme Timmins also stated that "Our goal with Arms Race is to make the gun game in our game of millions of guns really matter".

The new mode is set to be revealed in late October as apart of a new DLC. The game is currently available to play on PC, Xbox One, PS4, Stadia and macOS. Gearbox has also confirmed that the game is in development for PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, although the release date is not yet known. But what we know is that Borderlands 3 will get free updates for the next generation of consoles.
